The Best Vanilla Sugar Cookies

There are so many sugar cookie dough recipes out there - this one is by far the best I have made - so versatile - perfect for cut out cookies, sprinkle toppings and decorative frosting.

Steps

1
Done

Make the Cookie Dough

Mix the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes until creamy. Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat on low speed for 1 minute. Add the salt and baking powder and mix on low. Then gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time and mix on low speed. Add the cream and beat on low for another 30 seconds to 1 minute.

2
Done

Refrigerate the Cookie Dough

This is a crucial step to successful sugar cookies or cut out cookies! Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight.

3
Done

Bake the Sugar Cookies

Preheat the oven to 350°F / 176°C. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the cookie dough - I usually do this in batches. Cut out your cookies with any cookie cutter you desire, or for circles, you can also use a glass (lightly flour the rim first). Add sugar sprinkles if desired before baking. When placing on the baking sheets, make sure you have enough room in between each cookie so they do not melt together. Bake the cookies one sheet at a time, otherwise the cookies could be done at different times. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until they are lightly golden brown. Let cool - transfer them to a wire rack for cooling. If you are frosting the cookies, wait a good 30 minutes until they are completely cooled before adding any frosting, otherwise it will be a hot mess!
