How to make Homemade Hoisin Sauce
What is Hoisin Sauce?
Hoisin sauce is a thick sauce that gives dishes a pleasant and savory umami taste. Hoisin sauce is a staple in Chinese cooking and can be used in marinades, to glaze meats, add savor to stir fries, and is perfect for dipping sauces (hoisin is the dip of choice for Peking duck).
Fun fact: The word Hoisin means seafood in Chinese, although hoisin sauce does not contain any seafood ingredients. Hoisin sauce got its name from its popular use as an accompaniment to seafood dishes.

Recipe for Homemade Hoisin Sauce
Combine the following (whisk by hand, or blend):
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 Tbsp creamy peanut butter
1 Tbsp dark brown sugar OR 1 Tbsp honey OR 1 Tbsp molasses
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp rice vinegar
1 garlic clove, minced
A pinch of black pepper
A pinch of Chinese 5-spice powder
Optional – a dab of hot sauce, siracha or crushed red chili if you want more kick to the sauce
